OSCAR A. SABIDO, Senior Counsel was born in the town of San Ignacio in the western district of “El Cayo”. His upbringing throughout his formative years at Sacred Heart Primary School was heavily influenced by a Roman Catholic education under the tutelage of the Pallotine Nuns.
He attended St. John’s College Jesuit High School and Sixth Form at the Landivar Campus in Belize City. He sat the University of the West Indies (UWI) entrance examination to enter that university to read law. He was awarded a Canadian International Development Scholarship based upon his performance in that examination; he was the first of three Belize students to read law at the University of the West Indies after legal education shifted from the United Kingdom to the University campuses of the UWI. He qualified as an attorney-at-law in 1975 and did additional legal training in legislative drafting under the auspices of the Commonwealth Secretariat in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1976. He did a short stint as Crown Counsel attached to the Attorney General’s Ministry in Belmopan and was called to the Bar of Belize in May 1977.
He started his own private law practice in Belize City in January 1979 when he established the law firm of SABIDO & COMPANY LLP. After the passage of the International Business Companies Act and the Trusts Act in the early 1990’s he expanded into offshore financial services and established the subsidiary firm of SABCO (Offshore Financial Services) Limited. He is well known to his international clients in many jurisdictions to whom he has been referred to over the years.
He has wide and varied experience in the practice of law. He has appeared in every court in Belize and represented the defence in the celebrated 1991 case of Catalino O’Neal v. the Queen a decision of the Privy Council in England which was a bench mark case in respect to the law of provocation. He served between 1999 to 2003 as Chairman of The Belize Integrity Commission and as a member of the Public Utilities Commission of Belize from 2003 to 2008.
He was elevated to the status of Senior Counsel by the Chief Justice of Belize on January 22nd, 1998. He is an active member of the Bar Association of Belize and a Director of the Belize Offshore Practitioners’ Association. He is also a member of the General Council Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Association of Belize.
Rosami A. Sabido was born in Belize City, Belize on July 5th, 1983 and attended Saint Catherine’s Elementary School which later became Belize Elementary School. She then went on to attend Saint Catherine’s Academy, a high school from which she graduated in May 2000. While in high school she majored in Biology and Chemistry. Throughout her four years at the high school she met the honor roll and graduated with honors.
Immediately after high school she went on to attend Saint John’s Junior College, where she majored in General Studies and graduated with honors in May 2002. She then went on to attend Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, U.S.A. There she majored in International Relations and obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in International Relations from that university in May 2004.
Shortly after graduation from Wheeling Jesuit University she joined the law firm of Sabido & Company and worked there as a legal clerk from 2004-2006. Thereafter, she enrolled into the University of the West Indies Cavehill campus, Barbados where she read for her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and graduated with honors in May 2009. She then enrolled into the Norman Manley Law School in Kingston Jamaica in September 2009 and obtained her Legal Education Certificate in May 2011.
